A Novel Hemagglutinin Produced by Aspergillus niger
Institute of Applied Microbiology, University of Tokyo Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113
Strains of the genus Aspergillus as well as other microorganisms were found to produce hemagglutinin. A hemagglutinin of Aspergillus niger IAM 3008 has been purified 80-fold from the culture broth by ammonium sulfate precipitation and DEAE-Sephadex chromatography.
The hemagglutinin was non-specific for blood-groups. Its activity was inhibited by two pentoses, L-arabinose and D-xylose, the former being about 16 times more inhibitory than the latter. No hexoses or their derivatives so far examined were inhibitory.
The hemagglutinating activity was highly thermostable and was not inactivated on heating at 100° for 10 min.
